ABOUT THE ART
The name Minnesota comes from the Dakota phrase Mni Sóta Makoce. Using the original rendering of the name highlights we are on Native land here. The phrase Mni Sóta Makoce shortened to Mni Sota is simply the original rendering of the state of Minnesotas name. The girl in the image is wearing a Native American ribbon skirt, which is worn by many Native peoples and holds deep significance within Indigenous communities often representing strength, resilience, and community healing among many other things. Often worn during times of resistance, defiance, during periods of grief, and at many of our large gatherings and ceremonies. The Native American imagery throughout is meant to highlight our Indigenous values of care, protection, and shared responsibility to one another.

Meet Jearica Fountain

I am a Native American visual artist whose work is rooted in activism, education, and empowerment. Through bold imagery and vibrant color, along with original work I often reimagine recognizable logos, cartoons, and commercial imagery through my lived experience as an Indigenous woman to amplify social causes. My work blends traditional influences with a contemporary, pop art sensibility to challenge stereotypes, confront historical erasure, and make complex social issues approachable and accessible. I view art as a catalyst for personal and collective transformation that encourages critical dialogue, deeper understanding, and meaningful action within our communities and beyond.
