ABOUT THE ART
“Niiwin” is the Ojibwemowin word for “four.” In this piece, the four directions are illustrated against black velveteen canvas with Charlotte true cut glass seed beads, nylon thread, and hand harvested porcupine quills. The four directions hold physical and spiritual significance to the artist in their Ojibwe heritage, and the beaded piece visually displays the directions of waabanong (east), zhaawanong (south), niigaabii’anong (west), and giiwedinong (north).
